Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose is a species belonging to nonionic cellulose mixed ether. It is a semi-synthetic, inactive, viscoelastic polymer that is widely used as an additive in building materials, coatings, synthetic resins, ceramics, pharmaceuticals, food, textiles, agriculture, cosmetics, tobacco, etc. HPMC can be classified according to its use into construction-grade, food-grade, and pharmaceutical-grade.

Production process

The raw material of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is refined cotton, which is a kind of naturally occurring cellulose ether. Cellulose using naturally occurring fibers processed through alkali dissolution, pick-up reaction, washing, drying, grinding, and other processes. It is a healthy and environmentally friendly additive.

Dissolving method

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) products directly into the water, will produce cohesion and then dissolve, but this dissolution is very slow and difficult. The following three dissolving methods are suggested, and users can choose the most convenient method according to their usage:

1. Hot water method: Since hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) does not dissolve in hot water, and thus initially hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) can be evenly dispersed in hot water, and subsequently when cooled, three typical methods are described as follows:

1). Place the desired amount of hot water in a container and heat to approximately 70°C. Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) is gradually added under slow stirring, and at first, the hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) floats on the surface of the water, and then a slurry is gradually formed, and the slurry is cooled under stirring.

2). Heating 1/3 or 2/3 (desired amount) of water in a container and heating to 70°C, dispersing the hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) as in 1) to prepare a hot water slurry; then adding the remaining amount of cold or ice water in the container, and then adding the hot water slurry of the above hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) to the cold water and stirring, and afterward cooling the mixture.

3). Add 1/3 or 2/3 of the required amount of water in a container and heat it to 70°C. Disperse the hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) to prepare a hot water slurry according to the method of 1); then add the remaining amount of cold or ice water to the hot water slurry and stir, after which the mixture is cooled.

2. Powder mixing method: Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) powder particles with equal or greater amounts of other powdered ingredients, by dry mixing to fully disperse, and then add water to dissolve, then The hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) can be dissolved, without coagulation.

3. Organic solvent wetting method: Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) with organic solvents, such as ethanol, ethylene glycol, or oil pre-dispersion or wetting, and then add water to dissolve, then hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) can be dissolved smoothly.

HPMC Applications

Construction Grade Applications:

Binder and gelling agent: HPMC is commonly used as a binder and gelling agent in construction materials, such as mortar, cement, and plaster. It can increase the viscosity of these materials, improve their bonding force, and increase water resistance and abrasion resistance.

Waterproof materials: In the construction field, HPMC is also used to produce waterproof coatings and concrete additives to improve the water-resistance and weather resistance of construction materials.

Interfacial: HPMC can be used as a construction-grade interfacial agent for improving the smoothness and appearance of building surfaces.

Food Grade Applications:

FOOD ADDITIVES: HPMC can be used as a food-grade stabilizer, thickener, and emulsifier. It is used in food manufacturing to suspend particles, thicken mouthfeel, and improve the texture and appearance of food products.

Botanical Capsules: HPMC is also widely used in the manufacture of botanical capsules as a soluble shell material for encapsulating pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements.

Pharmaceutical Grade Applications:

DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEMS: HPMC is widely used in the pharmaceutical field to manufacture controlled-release drug delivery systems. It helps to release drugs at a controlled rate, increasing their bioavailability and reducing side effects.
